| The Croda da Lago area attracts every summer an ever increasing number of mountain lovers. Its highly scenic environment and its location far from the main roads and uphill lifts, make it the perfect destination for mountain climbers and for hikers alike. |
Particularly interesting are the geologic characteristics of the area and the paleontologic remains, mainly the fossils found in the San Cassiano formation, which are famous all over the world for their unique state of preservation.
Furthermore, the wealth and variety of Alpine flora species add to the charm of the area.
Alpe de Mondeval, one of the most important Mesolithic sites in the Alps, is another interesting feature of the area. Here, a perfectly preserved burial site, dating back to that period, was found; it contained an almost intact skeleton, the so-called Man of Mondeval.
The Man with all his belongings is now kept at the Museo Civico of Selva di Cadore. |
For mountain and rock climbers there are the historic Normal Routes to Croda da Lago (3rd grade) and Becco di Mezzodì (2nd grade).
Hikers, instead, will find a rich variety of footpaths, varying in length and difficulty, set in a highly scenic environment.
