CrossCountry-Ski Tracks
The G.I.S. is in charge of the maintenance of the cross-country ski tracks in Cortina's area.
The G.I.S. proposes the Cross-country Ski tracks in the area of Cortina d'Ampezzo: there are the easiest, completely flat tracks for those who practise this discipline for the first time: the "school area" - equipped with snowmaking systems, the snow cover is thus guaranteed throughout the whole winter season - or the former "airport" runaway.
There are the gently rolling tracks , that somewhere run through the wonderful woods of the Ampezzo Natural Park. These tracks are suitable even for the beginners wishing the satisfaction of skiing some kilometres along a circuit with some technical parts: "Pian de Ra Spines" and "Pian de Loa " circuits.
Besides, there are the bends, the technical ascents and descents of the 4 different loops (2, 3, 5, 7.5 Km) of the "3G" sports track, that represent the best ground to test one's physical fitness and technical ability as well as to train in the wonderful scenery at the foot of Monte Pomagagnon, both for expert skiers and athletes.
There is the classic track on the former "railway route" with regular and gentle inclination. This 30-Km long itinerary connects Cortina d'Ampezzo to Dobbiaco over Passo Cimabanche, half-way on the route on the highest point of this exceptional panoramic track. Its renown is mainly due to the "Dobbiaco - Cortina" the long distance cross-country event.
"Passo Tre Croci" track
Those who wish to venture on a demanding track, with difficulty and technique suitable for "World Cup" athletes, can go to "Passo Tre Croci". Here, there is one of the most technical and challenging tracks in the area, with sections running alongside the main road leading to the lake of Misurina and others through the woods dotted with the old fortifications of the 1st World War. The several highly technical loops go by the world remains. Passo Tre Croci is situated at an elevation of 1800 m, therefore a fairly abundant natural snow-cover is guaranteed from November through April. Excellent even for the competitors and the teams of athletes for the so called "training at higher elevations"; these tracks have witnessed some of the best athletes, among them the legendary "Grillo", Maurilio De Zolt, the best Italian athlete in the roll of honours and Olympic Gold medal Silvio Fauner from Sappada.
