Introduction
Mario Ferruccio Belli, journalist and writer, has devoted to Cortina hundreds of articles in magazines and newspapers, as well as four volumes. In 20 chapters, with seven links, written in his agreeable style, has exhaustively summarized the events rooted in the history of the peoples who inhabited these valleys in pre-historical times.

Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956: the first Italian Olympics.

The show was perfect: 32 nations participated with 923 athletes; for the first time in the sports history, a woman, Giuliana Minuzzo, read Olympia's oath; remarkable competitive athletes wrote heroic pages, the media reported enthusiastically about the event; last, but not least, the beauty of the mountains completed the scenario, TV broadcasts aired the images of the Ampezzo bowl, shining bright as a pearl, throughout the world.
The most outstanding result were the three gold medals won by the same athlete: Austrian Anton Sailer.
Italy, which had come out in pieces from the war, shone bright with the golden medal in the two-men bobsleigh race and the silver medals, in the two- and in the four-men competitions won by Eugenio Monti, an athlete from Cortina.

Author's Biography
Mario Ferruccio Belli was born at San Vito di Cadore in 1932, on the eight of September, anniversary of the Virgin Mary; for this reason he was given the first of his names; the second comes from his godfather, former officer of the Bersaglieri, wounded on Mt Cristallo during the Great War. These two events, joined to his astral sign of the Virgin have contributed to characterize his life. He got a law degree at Ferrara with a thesis on the Statutes of Cadore and Ampezzo. He has always been living in Cortina and collaborates with several magazines and newspapers such as “Il Corriere della Sera” and “Il Gazzettino”.

Among his publications, mainly about the “local” history, are: the History of Cortina (1973) three editions; the Austrian –Hungarian invasion of 1917-18 at San Vito di Cadore (1976); The Conquest of the Third Grade – Luigi Cesaletti (1977); Dolomites and Magic (1981); A Guide-book of San Vito di Cadore ((1984); a Guide-book of Borca and Vodo di Cadore (1986).

For his extensive knowledge of Cortina and Cadore, he is often asked to collaborate in publications and invited to hold conferences. Both “efforts” are generally accepted with great pleasure. He is married. He has three children and a dog.
