SEVEN PLATES FOR SEVEN MOUNTAIN REFUGES

Glassware on the dining table

Winter 2012

In his workshop Pio Alverà artfully cuts, melts and paints the noble material of glass.

This summer the creativity of this celebrated studio in Cortina has generated a series of wonderful glass dishes. These unique creations now adorn the dining tables in some of the mountain refuges in the Ampezzo Valley .

It is in fact possible to sample the delicious cuisine of the high-altitude kitchen served on these beautiful plates produced with the technique of glass-fusion, offering a feast not only for the palate but also for the eyes. These small works of art are for sale for those who wish to bring home a memory of their holiday in the Dolomites.

Valentine's Day – News
Inscribe a dedication to your loved one on a beautiful hand-made glass plate from the workshop of artisan Pio Alverà. Thanks to the initiative of Claudia Alverà, the creator of the glass plates for the refuges, and Sandro Siorpaes at the Averau refuge, you can create the perfect Valentine's gift.

Sunday 12 February from 12.00 to 15.00, the artist Claudia Alverà will be at the Averau refuge to inscribe a personal dedication for guest who purchase a glass plate (€40).

The event will take place on the weekend of Valentine's Day as part of the traditional celebration of the week of love by the Averau refuge.

Each series presents a theme connected to the history of the refuge.
The "hat of the alpine soldier"is the symbol of the signature pasta dish of Paola, the chef at the Averau refuge.

The ice-axe on the plate designed for the Dibona refuge, were chosen in memory of the great 19th  century alpine guide, Angelo Dibona, after whom the refuge was named.

The bright blue Gentian flower, that grows above 2,700m, was chosen for the plate of the high –altitude Lagazuoi refuge.

The bell on the plate of Peziè de Parù, once a shelter for shepherds, was chosen to  symbolize the cows grazing on the meadows surrounding the refuge.

Gigi Dariz from the Piezza refuge chose a flower design in honour of the marvellous blooms which every spring adorn the high-altitude meadows of Passo Giau.

Diego Valleferro’s choice of rock climbing nails as the design for the Alpino Passo Giau Hotel, was inspired by the hundreds of natural climbing walls in the Dolomites.

And of course, one cannot leave out the squirrel, symbol of Cortina and the Scoiattoli group of climbers, chosen as design by Lorenzo Lorenzi, who manages the refuge with his family.

The plates can be purchased in the respective refuges, which are all located in the Dolomites – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage area.
