During the war, many kilometres of galleries were excavated inside Mt. Lagazuoi. There, soldiers used to spend most of their time. Inside the galleries dormitories, magazines, machine-gun emplacements were built, plus mine chambers to blow up enemy emplacements, which otherwise would have been unconquerable.

Counter-mine galleries were excavated as a defence against enemy mines. Soldiers of both armies lived in the terror of seeing the mountain collapse on them.
