Greater accuracy and lighter weight of individual weapons and the spreading of machine-guns and artillery brought about the need to make the soldier less detectable on the battlefield and freer in his movements.

In 1909, the Royal Army adopted the new grey-green uniform after exhaustive tests had proved it a better camouflage than the former dark blue uniform.
