The Sasso di Stria

In the course of the war, the Austrians turned the Sasso di Stria into the stronghold of their defence formation on the Valparola Pass , in counter-position to the Vonbank emplacement situated at the foot of the Lagazuoi.

From the Sasso di Stria the Austro-Hungarians illuminated the Lagazuoi at night with floodlights to check for attacks by the Italians on the Martini Ledge

In 1916, work was begun on the digging of the "Goiginger" tunnel, which is reached by going up from the Tre Sassi Fort in a south east direction.

The tunnel allowed for provisions to be brought to the emplacement even under the crossfire of the Italian artillery on the 5 Torri and on the Martini Ledge. The ascent to the peak of the Sasso di Stria can now be made by walking along the trenches constructed on the mountain.

It skirts the war tunnels and is an easy and exciting walk.

The great restoration work, carried out by the Treviso branch of the Associazione Nazionale Alpini,  reveals the incredible feats of workmanship built by the 3rd Kaiserjäger Regiment.
