It may seem incredible, but along the paths of the Lagazuoi and 5 Torri area it is possible to find fossils of sponges, sea urchins, molluscs, gastropods, seaweed... and all this at an altitude of over
2000 meters
!
Not at all strange when we think that in actual fact the history of the Dolomites began in the sea! The fossils are the remains of organisms that made up these splendid mountains 230 million years ago.
It is really exciting to go looking for them in the "Strato di San Cassiano" (the San Cassiano layer), which is visible here.
