It was in 1970 that Aurelio Dariz decided that this was the ideal place to realise his dream: to open a refuge where he would reign supreme among the cooking ranges. And so it was. Today the Rifugio Piezza (the Piezza Refuge) is renowned for its excellent cuisine, its impeccable service and the beauty of its scenery. The terrace gives a view of the most well known mountains, from the Averau to the rocky mass of the Sella and the magnificent glacier of the Marmolada, where the sun sets to create the atmosphere that has made the Dolomites so famous.
An ideal departure point for excursions, cable-lined walks and climbs, the refuge is situated at the Giau Pass, 30 minutes away by car from Cortina d'Ampezzo, Badia, Alleghe, Agordo and the village of Longarone. A little curiosity: near the refuge lives a charming family of marmots. When you hear the unmistakeable shrill whistles of the marmot lookouts, you should stop and wait for the alarm to pass, after which you may see them if you are lucky.
