Monte Cristallo
The sentiero Ivano Dibona is a via ferrata that works its way along the main Cristallo crest from Forcella Grande to Col dei Stombi, where it meets up with the cart road Val Padeon.
Before becoming one of the most famous ferrata in the area the path served the Italian Army during the First World War. It was constructed by the Alpini to link all the front line positions on the Cristallo, and even today remains of casermette, barracks, hospitals, ladders and a cable way up to Val Padeon recount the life of those involved in the war between 1915-1917.
After the war the path was abandoned and, like all the sad memories it evoked, fell into disregard. During the 1960s Freddy and Ivano Dibona, nephews of Angelo Dibona, one of the mythical Cortinese Mountain Guides who grew up with Grohmann, explored the path and discovered hitherto forgotten sections.
It is thanks to Freddy Dibona that the interest in the path was rekindled, for it was his idea to restore the ferrata and make it safe for tourists. All the Cortina Mountain Guides helped restore the ferrate to its present-day state.
The sentiero was inaugurated on 6 September 1970 and named after Ivano Dibona who died on this mountain two years previously.
