This is what most people who have been in the presence of these gigantic rock formations say. Compared to other mountains: brighter, more colorful, more monumental, and seeming to be architecturally inspired. Formed 200 millions years ago out of the primeval ocean, today they reach 3,000 metres into the sky. Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801) discovered and defined the unique composition of the stone, giving the mountains their name. Now they are among the UNESCO nominees for consideration as natural heritage sites.
Hotels & Meublè/Garnì
The choice is truly enormous, from hotels located in the heart of the most famous resorts to those equipped with the most up-to-date sports facilities. Then there are those located just a stone's throw from the ski lifts as well as famous and prestigious hotels rich in history. All of these blend in with the environment and culture of the Dolomites.
Many hotels and other forms of lodging have devoted particular care to safeguarding the environment. They have done this by paying close attention to the choice of food and ensuring that their buildings adhere to the latest bio-architectural designs. In the South Tyrol a special ecological "sun dial" logo distinguishes those hotels committed to keeping effects on the environment to a minimum.
Characterised by service and care that reach levels of true excellence, the Meublè or Garnì offer a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning without restaurant service. These are ideal lodgings for those who travel a great deal.
Farm holidays: "Agriturismo" and "Masi"
Staying in an "Agriturismo" is highly popular in the Dolomites and an ideal way to rediscover the genuine taste of tradition and nature's fruits, born out of the ancient rapport between man and the earth.
Many of these farms offer not only excellent food but also lodging. Choosing this type of holiday means immersing oneself in farmwork and enjoying the fruits of ones labour, all strictly organic of course. And "Agriturismo" also means a holiday far from the frenetic pace in the city.
The “masi” and century-old South Tyrolean farms are often located far from the villages and offer complete relaxation. Traditional dishes made with home-grown ingredients can be enjoyed in a tranquil and uncontaminated environment.
"Rifugi": mountain refuges
These are the indispensable hotels at altitude, a shelter and lodging for all walkers, mountaineers, skiers and everyone who loves to get right up close to the immense rock faces. Clearly the service offered is fairly Spartan, but always adequate. The Dolomites boast a unique network and tradition of mountain refuges. Some are very famous indeed, almost as famous as the mythical mountains and rock faces beneath which they lie. The refuges are destinations in their own right, not to missed by the numerous tourists who want a spectacular close-hand experience of the Dolomites. And a night in mountain refuge is an experience definitely not to be missed.
The refuges of the Italian Mountain Club (Club Alpino Italiano) carry out an important and irreplaceable logistical role for all mountain activities and the Mountain Rescue service (Soccorso Alpino). During the winter months, when the refuges are closed, they keep one section open for emergency bivouacs.
Hospitality
Vast, varied and strictly linked to the culture and environment. There’s hospitality to suit everyone in the Dolomites with an enormous range of hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, huts, mountain refuges and even sport hotels. These are ideal places to stay and relax, to enjoy oneself and live in close contact with nature, deeply immersed in the atmosphere and life of the mountains.
