The entire area comprises an unusual geological environment, consisting of chalk strata, caves and ponors, some of which are now covered by the lake’s water.
The importance of this area is based in part on some archaeological discoveries dating back 2,500 years ago, therefore to pre-Roman or Roman times: in fact, a sanctuary of Palaeovenetian origin was built amongst the spa springs, and remains can still be found today.
The sanctuary was a location that the population used to request acts of healing from the curative divinity, who had magical health-giving powers.
In addition, many legends tell of the presence of certain beings, half human and half animal, named Anguane, aquatic divinities who presaged misfortune and death.
