Advent Windows

25 works of angels from the golden centuries of figurative art for 25 windows of the Comune Vecio to celebrate Advent.

The inauguration will take place in Piazza Dibona on 5 December at 17:30. Each window will be opened in the morning of the corresponding day, but to see the illuminated windows one will have to wait until 16:30, when the lights will be switched on.

On the occasion of the Christmas festivities, the Cortina Town Council is pleased to offer its fellow citizens and guests images taken from works by some of the most important masters of figurative art from the 13th to the 17th century.

A special guide will accompany men, women and children to the exhibition throughout the Advent season and the magic of Christmas. For this task, the child angel, portrayed on the right in the work The Arrival of the Magi by the Cortina painter Paolo Barozzi, preserved in the chapel of our town's retirement home, has offered himself. This icon will represent the town of Cortina in this event.

We have researched the works of painters who over the centuries have represented the figure of the Angel as a messenger of peace. If we look carefully, we will certainly discover how the depictions of the Angels vary in their features, their robes, which, with the passage of time, become more and more graceful in their colouring and details.

These masterpieces have enriched the world's historical and artistic landscape. The techniques of such great artists find their meeting point in the purity of the images and in representing the Angel in the role of ambassador of peace. And it is precisely with this in mind that the Administration wishes to be the spokesperson for this universal message.
