Walk to Lake Ghedina

Arrival
Cabinovia Freccia nel Cielo

The starting point for this walk is the cable car Freccia nel Cielo, behind the Olympic Ice Stadium. Take the cable car up to Col Druscié. When you exit the top station, you will find a track that goes downhill towards Pié Tofana: follow the track until you reach the junction with track n° 410, on your right, and take this path. Carry on along the edge of Lake In Po’ Druscié, a small heart-shaped lake used for making artificial snow, and continue on the same track, amidst trees and views onto the Tofane mountains that are an impressive sight on your left. After the intersection with track n° 409, stay on track n° 410, descending in the ever-thicker forest until you reach Lake Ghedina, magical both for its haunting beauty, and because it is the setting for the events described in some Dolomitic legends. For example, in a nocturnal ritual the warrior prince Ey de Net came here to consult the lake’s nymphs for their omens on the kingdom’s future.

The Lago Ghedina lakeside restaurant offers a sophisticated venue for a gourmet lunch, on the lake-view terrace or in the interior dining-rooms with their traditional decor.

For the return trip, you can follow the same route to go back to the cable car. However, we recommend continuing along track n° 410 which brings you to the attractive hamlet Cadin, where the forest opens and offers a fine view over Cortina. Continue on the road, that is usually very quiet, until you reach the hamlet Ronco. Here, don’t miss a visit to the Bob Bar, sited on the historic bobsleigh track and famous for its formidable filled rolls. From here you can take the track leading to the new climbing wall, and then over a footbridge back to the station of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car.

By car: The Freccia nel Cielo cable car is very close to the town centre, and it can be reached by following the signs for the Ice Stadium, Stadio del Ghiaccio. There is a large car park outside the lower cable car station.

By bus: The nearest bus stop is Hotel Franceschi (line 3), from where it takes just 5 minutes on foot. Alternatively, you just have to reach the town centre or the bus station, and from there you can reach the cable car with a 10-15 minute walk.

Variations

When you are coming down from the top of Col Druscié, you can take track n° 409 instead of 410. The two tracks start close together and they follow similar routes. When you are on track n° 410, you just have to follow the signs for Lake Ghedina until you reach it. This variant slightly increases the total time required, and it has an uphill section that would otherwise not be included.
