It is always flattering to win an award, and this is particularly true when we are talking about something as important as the Readers’ Choice Awards of Condé Nast Traveler. This is not only because of the standing of the magazine, but also because the result is based on the votes of people who travel for holidays or work and experience the hotels, the restaurants, the atmosphere and all the services that make the destination. Votes were polled and Cortina d’Ampezzo was ranked Best Ski Resort in Europe.
The 2018 edition of the Readers’ Choice Awards saw a record 429,000 voters involved in the different categories for a total of more than 1.5 million votes. The outcomes of the different categories suggest a trend, as two different articles by the editors and Pilar Guzmán point out, of tourists increasingly looking for places that feel real and that provide a close connection to the territory. This perhaps explains the success of Cortina, a mountain resort that is first of all a small town with its rich history and traditions, typical architecture, food and local language. Two other elements that might help understand how Cortina came before other renowned ski resorts across the Alps are mentioned in the article: the majestic Dolomites scenery and the upscale yet low-key vibe.
Nonetheless, knowing that excellence is a process rather than a goal, the whole tourism sector in Cortina is going through a process of improvement. The hotel sector, restaurants and ski facilities are being enhanced in view of the 2021 World Ski Championships, while waiting to know if Cortina is chosen as host city, together with Milan, of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
