A press conference on the joint bid of Milan and Cortina to host the 2026 Olympics took place last Saturday, 19th January, at the Alexander Girardi Hall in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The conference was moderated by the Director of Communication for the Bid, Eugenio De Paoli, and saw the participation of the Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo Gianpietro Ghedina, the Councillor for sports of the Municipality of Milan Roberta Guaineri, the Councillor for Tourism of the Veneto Region Federico Caner, the President of the Italian Winter Sports Federation Flavio Roda and the Undersecretary for Major Sporting Events of the Lombardy Region Antonio Rossi.
Gianpietro Ghedina, Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo
The life of Cortina is based on snow and ice: the town hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and even today, with the Ski World Cup, it has demonstrated its organisational skills for major international events. We strongly believe in this project, in the joint efforts of the different regions involved and in the desire to achieve this common goal.
Roberta Guaineri, Councillor for Sports of the Municipality of Milan
Expo 2015 was a great occasion for the city of Milan to be under the spotlight, demonstrating its ability to organise major events without having citizens feel the tension related to them. We firmly believe in the involvement of the population: there cannot be success without citizen support.
Federico Caner, Councillor for Tourism of the Veneto Region
Cortina is the Queen of the Dolomites and represents the renaissance of mountain areas. We believe in new investments with a reduced environmental impact and in seeking the most economically viable solutions with a positive impact for tourists as well as for the local population.
Flavio Roda, President of the Italian Winter Sports Federation
The involvement of several territories with different characteristics is a challenge. Cortina and Bormio are a good choice in terms of both organisational experience and local peculiarities. Italy has numerous winter sports destinations with a very high technical profile and this is a guarantee of success for the Olympics.
Antonio Rossi, Undersecretary for Major Sporting Events of the Lombardy Region
This bid is a dream, and a shared dream becomes a project. Now, like athletes know how to do, we need to work to achieve our goal. Our strategy is clear and we already know what are the next steps if our bid were selected.
