DESCENT TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY

  • S1 - Easy itinerary with a mild slope gradient that does not need a specific technique
  • S2 - Relatively wide slopes, moderately steep too (25°), the descent is in any case easy and smooth
  • S3 - The maximum slope gradient is 35°, skiing becomes controlled and more technical, albeit with a certain freedom on choosing the itinerary
  • S4 - The maximum slope gradient is 45° if the exposition is not high, starting from 30° if the exposition is higher. An excellent skiing technique is essential; it is not possible to curve at will, but it depends on the difficulty  and on the lay of the ground
  • S5 - The maximum slope gradient is above 45° with a low exposition, starting from 40° with a higher exposition. The psychological component becomes important.
  • S6 - Above 50° if the exposition is high, otherwise starting from 55° for short sections with low exposure.
  • S7 - Sections with 60°, rock jumps on very steep and exposed terrain.

Quality standards of the skier

  • MS - Medium Skier, who can ski down on S3 terrains, unless there are extended sections
  • BS - Good Skier, who skis down with ease on S3 terrains and can face superior difficulties unless there are extended sections
  • OS - Excellent Skier, capable of facing any slope on S4 terrains, in several conditions, and sections of S5 difficulty.

The addition of letter A (MSA, BSA, OSA) indicates the presence of possible alpine difficulties, where ice-axe, crampons and eventually ropes and other equipment is necessary.

The difficulty rate is referred to the most challenging section of the itinerary.
