Falcade is a town located in the Province of Belluno, situated 1300 m a.s.l. it's the main town of the Biois Valley. The name has its origins in the term "mowing".

THE ORIGINS
The first inhabitants settled in this area between X and XI Centuries, maybe due to its strategic position: the high mountains and the thick forests offered a good protection from the invaders. The local population begun to trade with the neighboring valleys of Fassa and Fiemme, and in 1358 a hospice was built on the San Pellegrino pass, in order to provide lodge and assistance to travelers.

Towards the end of the XIV Century the country, Falcade organized itself in "Regole" and "Laudi", associations of families which administered land use, care of infrastructures, traffic safety, etc.

Around the XV Century all the current Province of Belluno came under the rule of the Venetian Republic, which changed the administrative structure, replacing "Regole" and "laudi" in land amministration.

Falcade was nearby the border between the Republic of Venice and the Bishopric of Trento, and this led Biois Valley to be repeatedly subject to invasion attempts.

To Napoleon's control followed the Austrian domination, which went on until the annexation of Veneto to Italy, in 1866.

In the early years of the XX Century first social institutions were established in Falcade, such as the Dairy Cooperative and the Consumer Cooperative. In 1912 for the first time the town had the electric light.

Falcade and Valle del Biois mantained a border location even during the First World War, with the front close to the villages. These were hard times for the population which faced hunger and many difficulties.

After the war, the situation remained troubled: emigration of the labor force caused an important depopulation of the valley, phenomenon that affected for many decades all the Province of Belluno.

The Second World War make things worst, causing death and destruction. An emblematic episode happened in August 20th, 1944, when German troops, in a punitive expedition, completely burned the village of Caviola, killing and deporting a lot of people. In the second half of the 19th Century, with the economic upturn and the birth of mass tourism, the valley slowly turned into a popular tourist destination. Today Falcade, with its modern ski lifts and hotels, offers to tourists a complete and valued service, remaining anyway deeply rooted in its old traditions and Ladin culture.
