Fornace di San Vito

An easy walk suitable also for children. From the centre of San Vito take the cycle path towards Borca and continue for 1.5 km until you arrive in front of the Park Hotel des Dolomites, just after the border between San Vito and Borca di Cadore. From here, on the left, you will find a path that takes you to La Fornace in a few minutes. You return back to lLa Fornace is a structure that was built in the early 1900s and operated several times using stones found nearby to transform them into lime. It was used in particular to make the binder for the mortars and concretes needed for the construction and painting of the nearby 'Palace Hotel des Dolomites'. There were many structures similar to this one in our country and, as there was no cement at the time, their usefulness can be understood. On site, you will find information signs explaining its use and usefulness.
