Passo Giau

A fairytale landscape

The Passo Giau is one of the most visited Dolomite passes, is located in the Dolomites UNESCO SYSTEM No. 1 PELMO CRODA DA LAGO. What makes it unique is the wonderful landscape that can be admired from the altitude of its 2348m. The view extends from the snowy peaks to the pastures and woods of Agordine Dolomites with Marmolada, the Civetta, the Sella Group, Dolomites of Cadore and Ampezzo, Tofana, Antelao, Cristallo and Sorapis.

Climb to Passo is a classic for the guests who come to our valley. From the Pass you can reach the Alpine huts of the 5 Torri, of Averau and Nuvolau and the old trenches of the Great War area. On other side following the routs of Alta Via n.1 to reach the Plateau of Mondeval, where he was discovered the skeleton of the Mondeval Man. A fabulous place surrounded by nature with the ever Pelmo in front of us. Along the plateau you can reach the Rifugio Città di Fiume or the Rifugio Palmieri and its lake.

The pass is also a destination by lovers of cycling as it crossed several times by cyclists during the stages of the Gito d'Italia, but also by skiers, on it there are the ski slopes which give access to the 5 Torri-Lagazuoi.

Selva di Cadore is the gate of the Passo Giau as the road begins near the first houses of the village. After several turns the wood gives way to high alpine meadows up to the top, for those who want to continue along the opposite side it comes down to Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Queen of the Dolomites.
