History of the Cable Car

La funivia Principe di PiemonteThe "Principe di Piemonte" cable car Monte Faloria
Inauguration with Minister Benni and Countess Edda Ciano Mussolini

5 February: a day of celebration at Cortina d'Ampezzo, for tourism, for work and autarchy, as the cable car "Principe di Piemonte", that connects Cortina to Monte Faloria, was inaugurated. The construction is vigorous, daring, honours the technical know-how of Italian industry and opens up vast new horizons to tourism and sport in the Dolomites. It can therefore be inserted, as an efficient tool for work and production, within the general economic context of the state and its national engineering works. The new cable car is a perfect creature of Italy’s modern mechanical engineering, constructed rapidly and in complete autarchy. The Ministry for Communication authorised the project on 2 April 1938 and from then until today miracles have been made – one need only consider the difficulties that arise when building during all four seasons, at altitude, and with difficult access conditions.

The inauguration of the cable car was simple and solemn. H.E. Benni, Minister for Communication, the Countess Edda Ciano Mussolini, H.E. the Prefect, the Federal Minister, the Director General of the Inspectorate Cav. di gran croce Crispo, the Belluno Director of the Bank of Italy, the President of the Tribunal and other authorities were all present and watched the fascist formation, commanded by the Commissioner of the Fascio Dr. Bianco, march down the station road to the cable car valley station amongst a cheering crowd. The ceremony began immediately: H.E. the Cardinal Piazza, Patriarch of Venice, great lover of these mountains, war poet and great patriot, blessed the new construction and in a brief speech exalted not only the material but also spiritual ends of this modern construction, adding that science has rendered its service to sport.

The Prefect Comissioner for Cortina, camerata Brissa, saluted the representative of the Fascist Government, H.E. Benni, Minister for Communication, the Countess Edda Ciano Mussolini and the other authorities present at the ceremony, offering himself interpreter of the feelings of gratitude of the Community of Ampezzo for the providential help of the Regime to increase the potential of Cortina, cornerstone of Italian tourism. Camerata Bocci, who presides over the local tourism organisation, revealed the importance of the new cable car, not only locally but also on a national level, with regards to tourism and sport. He mentioned the various short stages of this project, desired by the Duce and carried out by the FAIT (Funivie Aeree Italiane Turistiche), under the direction of Baron Franchetti and thanks also to the support of all authorities involved, above all that of the Prefect Trinchero, but also the solidarity and collaboration of the local entities, the technicians. To finish H.E. Benni expressed his satisfaction for the fascist genuinity with which Cortina works and revealed the importance of these initiatives, testimony of the desire to work and the power of new Italy which has, as its slogan: “Live and continue producing”.
