This spectacular canyon of Serrai of Sottoguda, today "Natural Park", extends for about two kilometers between Sottoguda, the last village of the valley, and Malga Ciapela at the foot of Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites.

The route is sorrounded by rock walls over 100 m high and in some points it narrows and these walls almost touch each other. You can walk through the canyon on an elevated route above the Pettorina stream, which begins with a bridge in La Vérda area.




THE GALLERIES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

The two galleries were dig inside the rock, that people can see at the begin of the canyon, from Sottoguda, were realize during the First World War to deposit munitions and exploves.
At the end of the war, this galleries were use as rudimental chapels in order to remember the fallen, that they was bury in the militay cemeteries in Malga Ciapela and Salére. During the Second World War the inhabitants of Sottoguda's village were use as air - raid shelter. During the winter time, inside of one gallery, the nature create a spectacular art creation: a little ice nativity scene

THE VIRGIN MARY'S CAVE

In the origin the Virgin Mary's statue of the Serrai was locate in its cave with an initiative of the Rocca Pietore's parson, after the First World War.
During the '40 years it falled suddenly to the soil and, if it was very ruin, it was conservate for a long time. In 1987, with the celebration of the Marian year, the statue was replace. 
Durind the winter 2009/10 an iced block, which it was remuve from the up rock walls, go down to hit the statue. It was ruin irredeemably. It was replace another time and people can admire it till today.

The statue and the place, remember the Lourdes's Virgin Mary.

THE "SASS TAIÈ"

"Sass Taiè" in the local language, means "Rock cut" because in the old time was wisely shape from the man who need to go with wagons or sleds.
The old viability, to cross the canyon of Serrai, found the key passage in corrispondence of this boulder. The street was realize on the high part of the boulder (on the right side, when people go up) with support beams and wood scaffolding that were wedge between the two rock wall.
With a little bit of attention, people can se on the top of it, the sign that was sculpt inside the rock, from wagons that in old time pass through the canyon. During the First World War, to allow the pass of military wagons, the route was transfer down on the opposite side.

THE LITTLE CHURCH OF SANT'ANTONIO

The little church of Serrai was, in origin, dedicate to S. Antonio abbot, the pet's protector, follow a blight of livestock.
oday the church is dedicate to S. Antonio di Padova, who is celebrate on the 13 of June. In this day, infact, the priest celebrates the holy Mass.
The two frescoes on the lateral transepts, rapresent San Sebatiano and San Rocco, patrons of the Sottoguda's church. Outside people can see a tombstone which commemorate the war dead. It was position in 1934 when people transfer the military bodies from Malga Ciapela and Salère to the Ossario of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

LIVE THE SERRAI IN SUMMER...

UNCONTAMINATED NATURE, WATER GAMES, PURE EMOTIONS
Closed to traffic, it is possibile to take a little walk suitable for adults and children, also with the bike, but just uphill. From 2015 it come a natural park and it is possibile to stay in the nature, breathing pure air in an uncontaminated where the water games make from the falls, are the protagonists.

ICE PARADISE
The snow, the ice, the hushed silence... the Serrai dye it with white colors and arouse strong emotions. In the evening, once a week, people organize suggestive torchlights and the canyon transforms it in an unique environment, which leave in the heart a token difficult to forget.
To fortify this emotions, it is possible to admire the icefalls illuminate from color lights. 
During the day, the icefall are the protagonists: thery are famouse and desire from the "ice climber" national and international. They are a true game park for all lovers of this sport. They are also contemplated from the visitors who walk along the canyon: the emphemeral sculptures, created by the nature, leave people mouth open.

 The biggest icefall is named "La Cattedrale" and it is located near the little Sant'Antonio's church. It was given this name, because of its imposing and majestic dimensions.
