How to reach the starting point

By car: From the centre of Cortina, take the road towards the Falzarego Pass. Drive on until you reach the junction for the Bai de Dones car park near the Cinque Torri chairlift.

By bus: From the centre of Cortina, take the bus towards the Falzarego Pass, requesting a stop at the Cinque Torri chairlift car park at Bai de Dones.


A ski touring hike set in one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Dolomites, which will enable you to visit the locations where the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies fought during the First World War.

From the Bai de Dones car park, take track 424 on the left of the mountain hut. Carry on for about 15 minutes until you reach the crossroads with track 425, and take this path. Carry on along this track which will later be marked as track 439.

After about an hour you will reach the Rifugio Cinque Torri mountain lodge, from where you carry on, going around the Cinque Torri, one of the most distinctive and famous rock features in the Dolomites, and continuing towards the Rifugio Scoiattoli mountain hut. 

Once you have reached the mountain hut, you can stop there, or continue, hiking along the edge of the ski piste, until you reach the Rifugio Averau mountain lodge, renowned for its excellent food. From both mountain huts you have fantastic views of the Cinque Torri and the Tofana di Rozes; from Rifugio Averau you can also see mountains Civetta and Marmolada.

For the return, you can follow the same route back or ski down the slopes.
